The designer is Tutina Pasene who is of Rarotongan, Niuean and Tahitian descent.
Its a whanau (family) based company which means that Tutina is joined in the business by her close family circle Denis (life partner of Ngati Maniapoto descent)and their sons Rerehau and Arumaki. Their life values – balance, cultural integrity and koha (unconditional giving) – infuses their work, garments and relationships.
Rerehau is a graduate in Maori Art and Design from Te Wananga o Raukawa. He brings to Tutina Pasene his blend of contemporary and traditional influences to produce unique Maori and Pacific designs. Arumaki combines contemporary youth culture with traditional Polynesian design.
What results is a stunning collection of talent, skill and commitment.
The business is poised to grow beyond the one-off, made-to-measure-market and become a supplier of tailored garments to outlets. Currently simple design pieces are marketed through specialist art and design shops.
The name of the business has changed recently from Native Style to Tutina Pasene. The website and all marketing collateral will reflect this repositioning of the label as sophisticated, stylish, confident and makes it more available.
The Tutina Pasene customer is confident with a strong sense of identity and a desire to express this. The clothes are classic within their genre – timeless and collectable.
