I honestly smiled when I opened the press release for ‘A Novel Romance’, the lust-worthy colour collection from MAC that plays on trashy romantic fiction covers ala Fabio. It was under embargo when it arrived so now I can finally share how fabulous the visual campaign really is. Makeup brands can take themselves very seriously but a few – Benefit’s ‘Yes they’ll real’ and this MAC collection come to mind- play with a sense of humour around sexiness and what that means.
The blurb for A Novel Romance is pure unbridled gold. “Seduced by a secret lover, eyes lock, shrouded in the lustful, metallic hues and cool blackened purples of our Eye Shadow quads” it reads, tongue in cheek (whose cheek is your tongue in, we wonder?)
“Finally, irresistible forces collide and cheeks flush in shimmering Powder Blush, as you turn the page towards a powerful climax…leaving you utterly breathless.” I couldn’t stop smiling.
So, what is the colour collection like? Here are my photos.
In the eyeshadow quad below named for the collection, A Novel Romance, my favourite shade is Rising Passions, a greenish charcoal velvet texture eyeshadow with gold pearl lights. The quads retail for $105.
Good Kisser is a mid-tone fuchsia lipstick with a matte finish that has the right amount of warmth to be wearable by many, and a beautiful alternative to a true red.
Earth Sign Fluidline eye pencil ($38) is a deep brown that’s soft and easy to apply and pretty on.
The Sunset Sky crimson nail lacquer ($26) is perfect for all those Lorde fans into deep reds and burgundys that are so hot right now.
I liked the Midnight Ocean (dark royal blue) nail polish a lot more than I expected to. It’s a deep, rich creme polish and a great quality lacquer; better than most. I got a good coverage with just a coat, and it’s a beautiful colour.
