Knitting as Art is something that I find very interesting because it blurs the lines of so many mediums -art, fashion, crafts- but artist Sharon Russell’s latest exhibition combines her love of knitting with embroidery, cross-stitching human hair…
Collection by Sharon Margaret
June 2nd-25th 2011
Hand Held Gallery, Paramount Arcade, 108 Bourke Street, Melbourne.
Upon moving to Melbourne (the apparent Art Mecca of this side of the equator) I have to admit that I haven’t been to many art related ventures- something especially bad for someone with a degree in Art History.
This is why I was ever-so-glad to get an invitation to a friend of mine’s first solo exhibition, aptly named “Collection”.
This show is actually kind-of-a big deal for Sharon, because not only is it her first ever SOLO collection, but it deviates from her usual trademark of knitting. Knitting as Art is something that I find very interesting because it blurs the lines of so many mediums (art, fashion, crafts) and I think it’s only beginning to truly be explored in these contexts.
On saying that, the concept behind this exhibition was Sharon’s current fascination with embroidery, to which she cross-stitched painstakingly fine pieces of human hair into different shapes and materials.
I highly recommend Sharon’s online store where you can buy her SUPER cute knitted jewellery www.toggle.co.nz – I want the band-aid brooch so very much, and just look at her licorice allsorts, below.
Below: images of Sharon’s cross stitching fine hair into beautiful objects using bases such as doilies and silk flowers.
