Returning to his old haunt at Sky City, Sam Wills (a.k.a The Boy With Tape On His Face), involved the audience at AotearoHA Comedy Carnival in a way that virtually removed the fear I have of sitting in the front row at a comedy gig…
I love comedy so what better way to spend a Saturday night than enjoying an evening of entertainment brought to me by a gathering of NZ’s hottest comedians.
AotearoHA Comedy Carnival was out of this world funny and boasted such a variety of acts that even the most humourless person couldn’t help but find something to laugh at.
Sky City Theatre proved to be the perfect venue for the carnival and even provided two of its finest cabaret dancers to escort our MC, Mr Peter Helliar, onstage.
The evening began with a boisterous game of pass the parcel followed by a warm welcome from our jovial MC. And as if the entertainment of Peter Helliar wasn’t enough, we were then treated to a bevy of acts ranging from musical humour to circus tricks to good old fashioned stand-up. The acts were many and varied and ran for just the right length so as to leave us wanting more of the great ones and just enough of the questionable ones.
Sammy J & Randy (2010 award winners for most outstanding show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival) proved that music, puppets, and comedy are a hearty mix. And 2010 Billy T award nominee, Jarred Fell, had me on the edge of my seat when he asked an audience member to slam her hand down on what could possibly have been razor sharp glass.
Celia Pacquola held her own as the sole female entertainer of the night and legendary comedian, Dai Henwood, one again proved himself to be a kiwi favourite with his stories of his recent trip to the USA.
Returning to his old haunt at Sky City, Sam Wills (a.k.a The Boy With Tape On His Face), involved the audience in a way that virtually removed the fear I have of sitting in the front row at a comedy gig. Somehow the duct tape on his mouth made him seem less threatening.
Sadly this year’s Comedy Carnival has come to a close but with the rousing applause they received on closing night I’m almost certain the carnival will return in 2011. So if you’re looking for a great night out and a belly full of laughs, be sure to visit www.comedyfestival.co.nz for details of what’s coming up.
