AUT Design Network

AUT Design Network has been created to bring together key designers, policy makers, business & community leaders to engage social, economic & cultural issues through design and to shape a vibrant and dynamic Auckland.

AUT Art and Design have launched the AUT Design Network which will connect students and industry professionals with fun and informal ‘irregular events’, and if Thursday was anything to go by, I’m look forward to many more.

The Network has been created to bring together key designers, policy makers, business and community leaders to engage social, economic and cultural issues through design and to shape a vibrant and dynamic Auckland. I’m excited about making new connections and participating in the continual learning cycle.

Dean of Design & Creative Technonlogies, Desna Jury spoke about being proud of the collaboration between AUT and the Auckland Art Gallery to bring the ‘California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way’ exhibition to Auckland. They are excited about showing more design-based work in the gallery and around Auckland.

Later on, we enjoyed wandering slowly through the exhibition, seeing over 400 examples of ‘modern’ design, many of which have never been shown in New Zealand.

There is something comfortingly familiar about the pieces in the show; the products, architecture and magazines look a lot like what we still use and create now, nearly 50 years on. Top of the list, still, for me would be the work from Charles and Ray Eames, they were in just about every section of the show from print and motion to product design, for me, they were the heroes of the time.
