Following on from Thread.co.nz covering New York Fashion Week 2012 for the first time, we are excited to hear of a New York-themed ballet right here in New Zealand.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet is performing NYC – Three Short Ballets from the Big Apple and Thread will be at opening night next Wednesday, 29th February at Auckland’s Civic Theatre.

At New York we attended the AW12 runway collections of Rebecca Taylor, Carolina Herrera, and Karen Walker, and we were blown away by the beauty and grace.

We already mentioned how we are inspired by the style of ballet dancers in our fashion trends from TV piece on Thread here.

And in another ballet-licious synchronicity, Bendon used ballet dancers as lingerie models for its current Weightless print campaign. There’s something so stylish about dancers.

Larry Keigwin – the New York choreographer who is creating one of the ballets in the triple bill NYC – has worked on New York’s fashion week in the past. In 2010 he choreographed the opening event of New York Fashion Week for Vogue – which was the largest public fashion show in New York City history and featured over 150 of the industry’s top models, and gave over 1,500 guests a look at Vogue’s key trends for the fall.

Larry Keigwin gave Thread.co.nz an exclusive quote about that experience.

“I love fashion – so choreographing the 2010 opening event of New York Fashion Week for Vogue was huge for me. That whole experience gave me a great insight into the catwalk world and it’s inspired some of my works since."

"I reference fashion and pop culture in much of my work and FINAL DRESS, which I’ve choreographed for the Royal New Zealand Ballet is quite Mad Men-esque in its styling – think 1950s and 60s dresses, black patent stilettos and men in suits."

NYC New Young Classic – Three Short Ballets from the Big Apple. Book now: Auckland, Takapuna, Hamilton, Ashburton, Dunedin, Wellington, Napier from 29 February – 30 March, 2012.
