Blackboards are the new black

Chalkboard paint is one of those DIY items that you can’t go wrong with. Inspired recently from the different uses of chalkboard paint, I decided to add some fun to my children’s playroom using blackboard paint from Resene…

Blackboard paint gives an interactive touch to interior spaces by transforming any wall in your home or office into a playground. Art can be expensive and static, but the chalkboard trend offers a black canvas to create ever-changing artwork as a reflection of your mood.

The memory of a simpler time and the fun an old fashioned chalkboard can provide has seen a revival and is popping up and creating new interior twists. Interior magazines, Pinterest and popular blogs are full of examples of how chalkboard paint is no longer just for walls.

Chalkboard paint is one of those DIY items that you can’t go wrong with. Inspired recently from the different uses of chalkboard paint, I decided to add some fun to my children’s playroom. I have one non-scribbler and another who would happily go round scribbling on anything. A pen in hand and she can’t help herself. So with this thought in mind I decided to paint an old filing cabinet black. The face and sides being in chalkboard paint. So should the desire hold, my wee scribbler could have fun on her own furniture and not through the rest of the house.

Applied by brush, I used one coat of standard white undercoat. Followed by three coats of ‘Deep’ Enamacryl, gloss waterborne enamel. Enamacryl is a great paint that covers evenly, only has a slight odor and will not chip. Finally I used one coat of Blackboard Paint (exterior/interior – waterborne). All paint was bought from my local Resene shop.

Go on, get inspired, and give it a go….
