“Now listen, kids. Don’t be disappointed if the stand-up comedian is not quite as funny as Dad.”
Blank stares.
“Dad, you ‘re not really very funny.”
“Hmmm. You guys do deadpan really well. Keep it up.”
Michael Boon’s Big Time Last Chance Kids Show is an opportunity to introduce the kids to live comedy. Many years ago in basement bars of North London we enjoyed cheap, uplifting and unpredictable entertainment at the various comedy clubs. Thanks to the efforts of Mr Boon we now get to share that fun with our children and he didn’t disappoint.
“Ways to drive your teacher crazy” clearly drew on his own experiences as a primary school teacher and warmed what would otherwise have been a tough crowd. It was good to see that it wasn’t just the planned jokes that had the kids in stitches. The detachment of the fake moustaches led to plenty of uncontrollable laughter. At least it looked unplanned.
Michael showed his greatest talent when acting out a story lead by an off stage narrator. The kids know that dress-up can be fun but probably never knew it could be this funny.
A guest appearance by Rhys Darby was an excellent addition. He successfully incorporated the key elements of robots, dinosaurs, laser guns and helicopters thereby satisfying every red blooded seven year old. It was a delight to note that many the younger members of the audience has not idea who Rhys was other than another funny character. Credit also goes to Michael’s mate Rob Callaghan for his on stage support.
Without a doubt the kids deemed the highlight to be a game show entitled “What noise am I making”. Volunteers from the audience identify a noise with Michael suffering a cream pie in the face whenever the volunteer guesses right. A strong performance by volunteer Jess who achieved an incredible amount of splatter. Cream pies in the face. Classic.
All in all the show got a big thumbs up from our mob.
“So, do you think Dad is funnier than the guy who did the robot thing?…”
