I recently attended the opening reception for the ‘Hit the White’ pop-up store at Willis York hair salon in Wellington. The store was only open for two days, but was well worth it, so check out their beautiful shop online.

Artists and labels featured in Hit the White are Lazy Oaf, Lela Jacobs, Jam Squared, Les Queues De Sardines, Idear Papergoods, ToBe, Black Pearl , Darkness Void, Dubble You, Aja Pendergrast, Tinker, Bits & Bugs, 1988, Angela Federico, Knot A Tail, Charlotte Campbell, FLASH Jewellery, Kelly Spencer, Iggy & Lou Lou, Jade Weaver, Kate Ruth, Carol Brent and Jade Townsend.

There was so much great product, and I was especially excited to see one of my favourite labels, Lazy Oaf.

HTW consists of edgy and modern clothing, artwork, home-wear and jewellery, selected from New Zealand and around the world. These products are sold in a travelling pop-up store and are shown similarly to an art exhibition in both various retail environments and an online boutique.

One of the objectives of HTW is to present products that are not already available in popular NZ boutiques. Directors Jade Weaver and Lucy Campbell use this collective as a platform, to promote designers and artists creating outside of the mainstream as well as selling their designs and creations. For these reasons, I rate HTW not only as a retailer but also as a vehicle in pushing the limits of fashion and marketing. In our current time where design, fashion and art can be drained of their original inspiration and overhyped to the masses, HTW have a refreshing manner in blurring the line between the artist and the consumer.

The HTW directors also have a side project called Sink the Black which features limited editions or one-off handmade pieces such as hand-painted ceramics and jewellery. STB will soon be releasing a range of leather bags and wallets, and you can find STB ceramics currently at the Service Depot boutique in Wellington.
