Happy 60th birthday Royal New Zealand Ballet! You are a senior citizen but can leap and bound with the best of them.
To celebrate their 60th, RNZB is planning a bumper year for 2013, with a collaboration with Te Radar on a tour of heartland NZ, and a five city tour to China.
From 27 February 2013 the season launches, with Made to Move, three brand new dance works that celebrate the joy of dance, including a comedy set in a Bavarian beer hall, a follow-up to 2010’s haunting A Song in the Dark, and Venezuelan choreographer Javier de Frutos Pacific-inspired piece.
The hero of the year will be the TelstraClear Season of Swan Lake with dance icon Russell Kerr producing and opulent designs by the late Kristian Fredrikson and live music by Tchaikovsky performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Auckland, and the Southern Sinfonia in Dunedin.
Further to the end of the year, there’ll be a 46 centre tour of heartland New Zealand taking ballet to the smaller towns, called TOWER Tutus On Tour. This is a bit of a greatest hits, with a selection of highlights from the company’s repertory including excepts from Flower Festival at Genzano, Ihi FrENZy, Through to You and Don Quixote and a new version of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf which will feature narration by Te Radar.
An international tour in April will see RNZB take Giselle to China to five cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Suzhou.
