Private Lives, on now at Q Theatre in Auckland, is a play not to miss.
I had only ever been to two plays; one in London – boring, one in Auckland – also boring. So, I was preparing myself for my review of Private Lives on its opening night on Friday, September 7th at the Q Theatre in Auckland.
The venue was humming with the front bar packed full of thespians and New Zealand television stars. It certainly brought the punters along. The lights went down and the stage was set. It was a minimalist stage of cocktail glasses and black patent leather bench seats with a white backdrop.
With a cast of four, who were exceptional in their roles, the lives of Sybil and Elliot Chase and Victor and Amanda Prynne developed. I was taken aback by the superb acting by Matt Whelan (Elyot), Sophie Henderson (Sibyl), Mia Blake (Amanda) and Sam Sneddon (Victor.) Their wit and expressions were second to none. Elyot was my favourite role – rude and obnoxious, he made me laugh and I found similarities between his role and Basil Fawlty of Fawlty Towers.
Imagine yourself just married on your honeymoon, and can you believe, you bump into your ex with their new partner, honeymooning at the very same hotel! Amanda and Elyot (the exes) reignite their passion and fiery connection that it makes for an interesting story and ending. The second scene is also known to be a little risqué!
Private Lives is an original rom com that has been showing in theatres for 80 years, the most infamous actors being Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
I don’t want to give too much away and spoil it but I really must highlight that this is a MUST SEE play, it has given me a new perspective and will definitely look to go to another in the near future.
Private Lives is running to Saturday 29th September on Monday and Tuesday at 7pm and Wednesday – Saturday at 8pm. The show is 2 hours 10 minutes including interval. Ticket prices are $25-$55.
