Thread has attended the creative conference Semi-Permanent in Auckland for the past few years, so we were rapt to hear that Stolen Girlfriends Club are the local fashion designers on the lecturn in 2012.

Megan Robinson talked to the lads about what we can expect at the conference to be held at Aotea Centre in Auckland on 18th and 19th May 2012.

1. How did you come to be involved in semi-permanent, and have you attended before?

"Simon from Semi Permanent contacted us last year to see if we’d be interested…Marc had been to a couple and I’d done an installation 2 years ago, so we thought why not! We’re excited to rub shoulders with so many creatives, from so many disciplines!

2. So, what can we expect to hear about from you guys at your Semi-Permanent talk in Auckland?

We thought it was a great opportunity to share a bit of an insight into our path and how some of our ideas had come to life from idea to concept.

I guess our point of difference is that we are more of a BRAND, rather than a LABEL – we’re not just about clothes, we’re about all aspects of creativity – from design, to branding exercises and new, inspiring ideas.

So we’re really keen to share our journey with creatives – it’s been an interesting ride and we’ve definitely got some good stories up our sleeves!

3. How do the different disciplines of design, (graphic design, art and illustration, web design, photography, styling, and more) come together in the work you do?

All these disciplines appear at some point during our creative process – from concept to completion. After coming up with an idea for a range concept, we then draw garment ideas and develop prints to fit within this concept.

Art and illustrations are either done in-house or by collaborating with artists, e.g. Karl Maughan); then the art is manipulated for application to different fabrics. Once the sample garments have been made, we photograph these for our seasonal lookbook which we use for selling.

In the past we have also hosted exhibitions, concepted external photo shoots and styled special projects – all under the Stolen Girlfriends Club umbrella.

4. If you weren’t fashion designers, what would you do?

I would love to design houses and interiors and lighting / furniture…and Marc would be a rockstar for sure .. haha he already is ..

5. Which discipline of design has the worst reputation? Do fashion designers? Do they deserve it?

Probably fashion designers – it seems to be the industry everyone wants to be in, everybody seems to be coming out with a range of clothing these days! Just like everyone is a DJ.

I don’t think we deserve it – if you are disciplined and hardworking, your work deserves respect.

We are judged by each new range so you have to keep up creating ranges that people like and also want to buy – always have to bring our A game!"
