The latest summer makeup releases from Maybelline

Imagine my surprise when this luggage case showed up – and I opened it, to discover the latest Summer 2015 makeup releases from Maybelline New York! Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it landed in Arrivals. The press release was even printed as a boarding pass for Megan Robinson on MNY Air. Cute. They’re releasing nine essentials this summer ideal for your carry-on. These perfect travel companions include every shade of lipstick you need under the summer sun, a pore eraser, a mascara, a liquid eyeliner, and a go-with-everything eyeshadow. Best yet, they’re all reasonably priced so you look great and have more money to spend on that holiday. Win-win.

Below – some travel essentials: MOR toiletries bag, passport, Alex Perry cats eye glasses from Specsavers, Maybelline Color Drama pencil, Kagi leaf necklace, Dermalogica Pure Light SPF50 day cream.

Next up, EYES.

I do think the lips are stronger in this collection than the eye makeup products. The Master Graphic Liner ($14.99) is a slanted felt tip style eyeliner which came out a bit thin and not very pigmented. The Big Eyes Light-Catching Eyeshadow in Luminous Nude had brown and grey colours in its quad compact, and they were very cool-toned on the skin, so this is perfect for you if you like cool grey-browns. The darker brown was an ideal eyebrow powder colour for me, though. The best product was the mascara – Maybelline have always been awesome at mascaras and are New Zealand’s number one mascara brand at grocery and pharmacy – and this was effective at thickening and lengthening.

Pumped Up Colossal Mascara is the latest from their Volum’ Express (not sure why the e is missing) range. This new mascara has a double-curved wand and it contains Maybelline’s highest dose of collagen for bold lashes without clumps. It worked well. The mascara retails for $23.99.

Lastly, we look at SKIN: at new products including a pore eraser, blusher and bronzer powders, and a blush stick.

Baby Skin

In real life, baby skin is the most amazing thing, it’s soft as a baby’s bottom (obv) and has collagen levels that are insane. In the cosmetics world, Baby Skin is a pore eraser; a silicon gel you smooth on under foundation to even out the skin. In geographical terms, it turns a moonscape into a bowling alley. This is a cheaper version of products such as L’Oreal Magic Blur or Benefit’s POREfessional, among many others. As opposed to a pore-minimising skincare cream, this is a topical wash-on, wash-off makeup pore gel. I found it a bit oilier than other pore gels but it is good for its low price, $14.99. It is pictured swatched on my thumb, below.

Master Hi-Light

This Hi-Lighting Bronzer, pictured below in 50 Light Bronze, reminds me of Guerlain Meteorites pearls that come in a variety of pastel shades and highlighting shades which you combine to make an all-over glow. There are two blushers and two bronzers, both with multi-tonal shades chosen to highlight and contour as they are blended together. They are much more shimmery on the skin than they appear in the palette so start off with a light touch so you don’t turn from Glow Town Road onto Disco Ball City. $19.99 each in four shades: 50 Light Bronze, 30 Coral, 20 Pink Rose, and 60 Deep Bronze.

Master Glaze Blush

Master Glaze is a cream blush, with a consistency a bit lighter than, say, a MAC Creme Blush, and comes in stick form in a wind-up plastic tube. This achieves a good colour on the skin. At first, I found it hard to blend over foundation without it congealing slightly with the foundation, making layering hard. To be fair, this could have been due to the high humidity, so I tried it again in the evening, which far better results. Gives a pretty finish. These retail for $14.99 in four shades: 30 Coral Sheen (no relation to Charlie), 10 Just-Pinched Pink, 50 Make a Mauve, and 20 Pink Fever.

Bleached Neons Nailpolish

These four new shades of nailpolish combine two trends – neon, with white wash- to give this washed-out neons. They are basically pastels on acid. The nail polishes are $8.49 in 242 Coral Heat, 243 Tropink, 241 Sun Flare, and 244 Chic Chartreuse.

Creating Colour Stories

You can choose products across the new releases to suit your own colouring. Pictured below is a coral story: a few of the new collection items in a coral colourway – blush stick, Master Hi-Light, Color Drama, and 14HR Lipstick- that you can wear together for a pretty summery face.
