In this Designer profile, we chat with New Zealand fashion designer, Emma Burton of Woodward.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your background in design?
I live in St Heliers, Auckland with my Husband Mark and 2 Boys; Ollie 3.5 and Harry 20 months. I run Woodward a new womenswear range, a swimwear label emmaford and have been in fashion retail for over 10 years!
Many years ago I went to the Art and Design college in my hometown Christchurch, from there I have spent time custom making swimwear then creating emmaford, Woodward seems like a natural evolution in our business.
What inspires you?
When I am designing the collection I like to think about what is practical for my lifestyle, things I would love to wear! I feel like my life is similar to so many woman juggling a family, a career and still wanting to look your best.
My Husband Mark works with me on the design of Woodward and we both have different ideas, I think this really balances out my concepts, he always has different inspirations and that’s when we get the best results.
Who is the Woodward woman you design for?
Woodward is more of an aesthetic than an age or a shape which is something I find really exciting.
I love to see women of all different ages, size and personality put together our garments in unique ways.
What do you do when you are not working on the label?
I took up classical flute late last year I played throughout my childhood and I am really enjoying it. I also spend a few mornings a week going for a walk with my boys enjoying the St Heliers beach and a double shot flat white.
What are you plans in the near future with Woodward?
The new summer collection will arrive instore in late July, so I’m excited about that! We are also really happy to announce our latest stockist for Summer Wendy’s Boutique in Tauranga.
We are collaborating with illuminate candles on our second candle collection which is going to be beautiful the new summer fragrances are incredible!
