FINZ Historical Lectures: “New Zealand Fashion Design”

Angela Lassig will examine the emergence of contemporary fashion design in New Zealand and the influences that have shaped this country’s designers in four illuminating FINZ Historical Lectures inspired by the celebrated new publication from Te Papa Press – New Zealand Fashion Design.

Penned by Lassig, the 532-page publication profiles 25 of the country’s top contemporary fashion designers, providing an insight into their design philosophies, inspiration and professional growth, as well as the key developments that have brought New Zealand fashion to international attention over the past 30 years.

Lassig was senior curator (history) at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa for eight years and remains active in research on fashion and textile history in nineteenth and twentieth-century New Zealand.

The FINZ Historical Lectures, to be held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin from May 18-21, will feature a keynote presentation from Lassig, followed by an intimate conversation with a fashion luminary regarding their personal experiences as a designer.

The guest designers will include – Denise L’Estrange Corbet from WORLD (Auckland); Deborah Sweeney (Wellington); Sharon Ng (Christchurch); and Margi Robertson from NOM*D.

These lectures are presented by Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ) – “the voice of New Zealand’s fashion and apparel industry” – in association with Te Papa Press and host partners: AUT, Massey University, CPIT and Otago Polytechnic.

“New Zealand Fashion Design is a very significant publication for the industry. It provides an intellectual perspective on the evolution of New Zealand’s contemporary fashion designers and the business of fashion itself. We felt that these unique insights should be shared with a wider audience and are worthy of discussion in public forums throughout the country,” says FINZ executive officer, Mapihi Opai.
