I’m a firm believer in the power of one.
Yes I love my Louis and drool over Dolce but going gaga for Gucci is good for the soul when I consider the $8mil they raised for disadvantaged women and children in Africa. Fashion reporting aside, I’m an ethics major, I support local businesses, volunteer regularly and proud to wear my heart, (& my Helmut) on my sleeve.
I suspect, dear Thread readers, I’m not alone.
It was no surprise to me that 2010 NZ Fashion Week opened with ethical fashion from Starfish. Or that Pammy and Richie came to Godzone to launch eco-friendly A*Muse here. We champion catwalks with a conscience, lending our love to fashion forward causes like the Dress for Success, Look Good Feel Better and of course the upcoming Fashion for Quake. We don’t need an excuse to dress up, but we’ll find one.

And when my partner suffered a severe traumatic brain injury two years ago, how did I juggle teaching him walking and talking while suddenly providing for two? With fashion. The flexibility to shoot sporadically and write from home, fashion became my saving grace. A far cry from catty, I found the female friendly sphere an oasis of support and understanding that frequently called me back from the brink of exhaustion and despair.

Our passion for pretty runs much, much deeper than people give us credit for. The truth is, we’re passionate people in general! That lust for colour and couture continues to a hungry suspicion the world can be more attractive. Yes we can vote! Yes we can work! Yes we can end injustice, poverty and war! We are the trendsetters, the advocates for change; the people of tomorrow living in the now, desperately dragging the world towards a brighter future.
