In conversation with RUBY & Liam

Thread hears from Deanna Didovich, RUBY Designer and Emily Miller-Sharma, Liam Designer, about their inspiration, muses and theme songs for their latest Spring/Summer collections…

I don’t know about you, but I love to hear the "back story" of a collection.

I can’t even go to an art gallery without reading the little white cards on the left of each painting to see what the artist had in mind. To this end, (no pun intended) Thread had a conversation with Deanna Didovich about RUBY‘s collection ‘The End’, and Emily Miller-Sharma about Liam‘s collection, ‘In conversation.’

Deanna Didovich, RUBY Designer and Emily Miller-Sharma, Liam Designer, share about their inspiration, muses and theme songs for their latest Spring Summer 2013/14 collections…

Deanna Didovich, RUBY Designer

– What was your inspiration for the RUBY ‘The End’ collection?

My original inspiration for ‘The End’ came from one of my favourite movies- The Talented Mr. Ripley. I just loved the Italian seaside holiday wear- the classic nautical stripes, and soft florals. It was the perfect starting point for a summer collection.

– Did you have muse in mind while designing?

This season, it was definitely Marge Sherwood from The Talented Mr. Ripley. She plays the beautiful Ingenue in the film, but I was also attracted to the darker side and characters in the film- which came out in the use of black lace, and metallics dotted through the range.

– If you could choose a theme song for the collection what would it be?

– What’s your favourite RUBY ‘The End’ piece?

I love the Santa Lucia halter dress. It is so feminine and chic and I adore the sweetheart neckline. The perfect summer party dress.

What was your inspiration for the Liam ‘in conversation’ collection?

Reading Salman Rushdie’s vivid descriptions of the Indian Territory in The Sundarbans Jungle in his novel Midnight’s Children. I really wanted to be in Rushdie’s dynamic and surreal jungle. And so, referencing the custom of conversational prints for where one had visited or would like to be, in conversation hints at it: an Indian-inspired paisley jacquard suiting and light weight silk cotton clip jacquard, a vine patterned guipire lace and a translucent silk stripe that when gathered or distorted takes on a life of its own. Colours too are rich and full; midnight green, electric purple and iridescent blue.

Did you have muse in mind while designing?

There is a mentality behind the design of Liam that interlinks with the mentality of the people who wear it. Classic pieces with a twist interlink with each other season after season. Clothing that can go from workwear to something more formal with a brush of the hair or a change of the shoes. The end use of a garment is always present in my mind – where a piece might be worn and who it might be worn by. Also, there is a mentality towards dressing.

If you could choose a theme song for the collection what would it be?

Wildcat – Ratatat, Faberge Falls for Shuggie – Of Montreal & Tomorrow Never Knows – The Beatles

What’s your favourite piece and why?

I love the Shundar Dancing Top (below). The name comes from part of the word "sundarban" (shundor meaning beautiful) which is a jungle that is partly in Indian territory and where I have drawn inspiration from for the collection. It’s in an iridescent colour which is great to wear, the fabric is a beautiful silk cotton jacquard and it’s comfortably oversize but the ruffle at the hem makes it feel a little more special. Also the back neck tie has little bells attached which twinkle when I walk around.
