Karen Walker has moved her Ponsonby boutique across the road and up the street, into a heritage building with a complete re-fit. We called by today on opening day to say hi and congratulate Karen Walker and her team on the gorgeous new store, over a glass of Moet and cakes by The Caker, Jordan Rondel.

The store refit was by Katie Lockhart who has a long-standing relationship with designing the Karen Walker boutiques and also the The Department Store. The shop has been months in the creation, having been made earthquake-proof to building codes that saw it gutted and re-floored and walled. The shop interior is small-but-perfectly-formed and has a space upstairs that’s perfect for a storeroom or perhaps a VIP salon in the future. The interior colours are soft and complement the clothes, in cream and peach, with gold mirror-style frames on the shop window and framing TV screens playing the latest collection on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week.

Inside, bags and shoes rest on plinths and costume and fine jewellery inside glass cabinets sharing the space with some taxidermy magpies! It is good to see the return of the sold-out bangles – in more colours, too – and some navy quilted motif-studded zip purses.

Visit the store at 128a Ponsonby Road, phone 09 361 6723. Below: See photos from the opening day.
