"I have a background in Tailoring" says Luba. "My father was a bespoke tailor, and mum was never far away and she would help with the hand-sewing amongst other things. When we arrived in NZ in the 1960s, dad was employed by Cambridge Clothing, and mum joined him soon after. My sister was in high school but had to leave to help with the family and joined Cambridge as well."

"At that time knowing how to sew was a plus and it helped with the finances; clothes were more expensive to buy and it was very feasible to make your own. I too left school at 15 and started working in clothing. I still enjoy the new designs, sometimes they are quite a challenge."

Below: The mannequin and I at my workroom/studio where we have created some great pieces for many designers. It makes us very proud to say, "That’s what we made."

"I initially started to specialize in make to measure, men’s and women’s wear. Already set up to make suits, we began to Cut Make & Trim, coats, trench coats, jackets, vests, trousers, skirts, blouses, in woven fabric.

Our clients for Make and Trim include prominent designers such as Jane Daniels, Moss, Taylor, Keith Matheson, and Paula Ryan just to name a few. They are very particular about their quality, and being in this field 24 years we have got to know our customers’ expectations and make them proud of their design.

Tailoring is a skilled process in manufacturing, the pieces don’t just go together, they are meant to fit in the way to give the garment an optimum look.

We have necessary machines to help us achieve the best results, Reece keyhole is another special machine to give a garment a more exclusive look.

Once the garments are joined and have been under pressed, then they go on hangers for the next operation. On completion we can arrange for the final pressing, or you may have your own skilled presser complete your design.

We can do sampling and prototypes. We don’t just make it fit; staying very close touch with the designer and patternmaker to make sure of good results. This is a good way to get to know the garment right from the start, especially if we are to do the production later on.

At your convenience, we would like to make you a trial garment or a sample.

Being in-between seasons, we have space at the moment if we can help you in any way with your existing or new season’s production.

Our charge out rate is 45c minute. Small cuts no problem, 50 a minute.

Through the years we have developed a close relationship with the public giving them an alteration service which customers come back again and again, and mention us to their family and friends.

Should you need our service at your retail store, or you need a excellent maker for your upcoming season’s production, don’t hesitate to contact Luba.
