I got really excited when I found out a friend of mine was entering the Westpac Young Designer Competition, because I adore her stuff and think it truly belongs on a catwalk.

Meet Jessica Grubisa. She’s entered in the 2012 Westpac Young Designer Competition, and already has a long list of fashion credential including a Bachelor Degree in fashion, a much coveted role as assistant fashion editor at Black magazine, and stylist on a number of international shoots; and she is only 23.

If that isn’t enough to make you green with envy, then take a look at the amount of talent that has gone into her collection Rags to Riches. I caught up with Jess and we talked about the competition, Prada and Kayne West.

Did you always know you wanted to design?
Yes. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to be a designer.

Why?
Ha. Well I have always gravitated towards fashion. I grew up with it. My mum was a window designer for DFS and my grandma owned a sewing factory. It’s in my blood.

Who influences your personal style?
Everything Prada has ever done. They inspire me every season. Hip hop in general. I like to wear things that make me happy. Prada and hip hop basically. Kayne West covered in Prada hugging Kim Kardashian – that makes me happy (laughs).

I like that your stuff seems to not take itself to seriously like a lot of other designers, why do you think that is?
Probably because I don’t take myself too seriously, my pieces reflect my personality. When I design, I leave room for things to just happen, it’s a fluid process. I take an idea and run with it. Sometimes a mistake can be exactly what you wanted to happen.

Why did you enter the Wespac Young Designer Competition this year?
To win. To get a show at Fashion Week. I’m at a stage in my life where I am very ready to launch my label. I’m uber ready. And this would really help me. A lot.

Why should we vote for you?
My collection is legit. I have hand sewn 70,000 gems. There is hand-knitted tinsel. If I could just get to Fashion Week and have my things on the catwalk then you’ll know why you voted for me. It’s beautiful close up. And you could change my life. So please vote for me!

Jessica is also doing a competition where you can win one of her amazing pieces! For the details, check out my blog where I am hosting it haemeandrobecca.blogspot.co.nz

AND if you are just feeling nice and want to vote via the competition go here on Facebook.

Closing date is this Sunday 19 August 2012 and winner will be announced on Tuesday so get entering!
