Gareth Pugh and Nick Cave are just two of the speakers coming to Auckland for Shapeshifting, a conference on the Transformative Paradigms in Fashion Textile Design. Maddy de Young went along to find out all about it…

From March 14th to 16th, AUT University Department of Fashion and Textile at the School of Art and Design in partnership with the AUT Textile and Design Lab will present Shapeshifting, a conference on the Transformative Paradigms in Fashion Textile Design.

Bringing together 60 of the world’s most prolific and innovative fashion and textile designers, Shapeshifting will offer keynote speaker workshops, presentations, performances, exhibitions and networking events. Internationally it is one of a kind, and spaces in the workshops are already selling out.

Leading the presentations are international fashion designer Gareth Pugh, fashion theorist Otto von Busch, performance artist and designer Nick Cave, fashion designers Shingo Sato and Ying Gao and experimental textile designer Elaine Ng Yan Ling. These artists are renowned for their innovative and experimental designs; whether it is Gareth Pugh’s wearable sculptures, or Elaine Ng Yan Ling’s work with humidity.

At Shapeshifting’s heart is this idea of transformation, of changing organisms, changing trends, changing modes of production. It is about forward thinking and is transformative in its approach to fashion conferences.
