Stolen Girlfriends Club have created surfboards with their fabrics in a colab born from a mutual love affair with the ocean, known as STOLEN X HAYDENSHAPES…
“STOLEN Objects, look out for Counterfeits”
Haydenshapes have created limited edition art in the form of surfboards in a colab with Stolen Girlfriends Club born from a mutual love affair with the ocean and known as STOLEN X HAYDENSHAPES.
Hayden Cox (founder of Haydenshapes) and Luke Harwood (Co-Director, Stolen Girlfriends Club) tell Thread about it in this exclusive Q and A.
How did Stolen Girlfriends Club and Haydenshapes cross paths?
HS – I’ve been a fan of the brand for a while, and really dig the vibe they have going on so we hit them up. The Boys behind the brand actually rip as surfers too, so it was a nice fit.
SGC – We’ve also been working on with a new category called ‘STOLEN OBJECTS’… Objects we create, or with other people outside of our direct fashion lines. Hayden’s one of the top young surfboard manufacturers in the world, so it was nice to work on a project together.
What gave you the idea to use fabrics as the basis of the prints and how is it done?
SGC – The idea was to take an old technique backyard surfboard manufacturers and surfers used do in the 70’s, which was to use Hawaiian and Balinese cotton sarongs that they’d gathered from their surf trips and have them glassed in under the fibre glass cloth as a painting or pattern print across the board.
HS – We love to experiement with weird and unique concepts and designs for our boards, so injecting this way of thinking into creating the STOLEN X HAYDENSHAPES came naturally. We took this old idea and applied it to the project using leftover signature prints from past and present collections and had them glassed under the fiberglass cloth. Working with fine silk georgettes and new modern board construction meant that these are really light.
How has the collab been received so far?
SGC – Most of the kids from the 1990s- 2000’s have never seen this technique before, so I guess it’s cool again and looks pretty gnarly with skulls or cigarette prints, rather than bamboo grass sticks.
HS – These boards are pretty “high-end” in the world of surfboards, as they are delicately handmade, which is also reflected by the price. They have gotten loads of attention and have been featured in blogs and mags all around the world which is pretty cool.
What what the idea behind the campaign?
SGC – we reached out to our friend Maya Villiger of http://turnedout.tv to shoot ones of the boards in New York around the downtown counterfeit district… basically a play on Stolen Objects and luxury counterfeits. The board in the image I like to call the "Anarchy Burger" features the Rhinestone skull print from our new collection.
About the boards:
Pop colour silk fabrics from past and present SGC collections are the print foundations that lay across an EPS foam base beneath an epoxy laminate, creating a line of surfboards that stand out in racks amongst the surrounds of their traditionally bone coloured or spray printed counterparts. Truth be told, you wont actually find these amongst the racks in store. Hand made by custom order, each limited edition piece is unique to the buyer’s specifications. Although some may hang them on their wall as art, they are in fact high performance surfboards available in any desired model from the Haydenshapes 2012 range… Yes, this means the Hypto Krypto, Shred Sled, Psychedellic Germ etc.
RRP $1495 AUD
RRP $1100 USD
The STOLEN X Haydenshapes limited edition collection is available online only, via custom order. Each piece is unique and hand made to specification, via an intricate and ultra delicate process that must allow 4-6 weeks manufacturing time. These boards are pretty damn special, we must tell you.
