There’s been SO MUCH on this year it’s been crazy. Or should we say, cray cray? That’s one of the words I heard for the first time in 2013, along with twerk, cronut, thigh-gap, YOLO, derp, and swag.
Either way, it’s been one of the best for Thread. Some stats – next year will be the 14th year of Thread website.
Firstly I want to say a huge thanks to you for reading Thread!
In 2013 we changed to a .com url www.threadnz.com to reflect the international readership that is growing (the thread.co.nz url takes you to the same site.) We took to Instagram with fervour (@threadnz) and Pinterest. We loaded 532 original articles, which is over ten a week (no wonder it felt busy).
So below, we bring you a few of the highlights of 2013 in photos. The links all take you to the original articles on Thread website if you want to read more.

Here are our highlights from URBIS Designday ‘Journey of Connections’ on Saturday 23 March 2013; where a strong theme was the linking of personality to product, in interactive displays.
April
On 3rd to 5th April, Wellington Fashion Week flew us down to view the collections in the capital. Below: Highnoontea.
Here are the highlights of day Wellington Fashion Week 1 and 2 here, 3 and 4 here.
In April, Evelyn Ebrey was on location at Mercedes Benz Australia Fashion Week 2013, covering it for Thread.co.nz. Read our MBFWA Day 1 post here and MBFWA Day 2 here and MBFWA Day 3 here and MBFWA Day 4 here and MBFWA Day 5 here. Photo, Evelyn Ebrey.
Peace, love and sassiness was our exclusive winter fashion shoot on 26th April by stylist Reema Alfouir and photographer John Bozinov, using fashion from Wellington stores, and inspired by sassy 1970s women.
May
Showroom 22 presented Spring Summer 13/14 with a salon runway show of menswear and womenswear collections in their fashion showroom on High Street on Wednesday 15th May.
The Illusionists stage show came to Auckland, and on 23rd May Thread walked the ‘black carpet’ at The Civic Theatre at opening night and shared what to expect here.
June
Thread went along to Semi-Permanent at Aotea Centre on Friday 31st May and Saturday 1st June to hear international creatives in design and advertising speak on their craft. Comedian Te Radar was an excellent host; clever and witty throughout Semi-Permanent 2013. Read our article on Advice for Creatives from Kelly Thompson here.
Hosted by Mickey and Minnie and with liberal sprinklings of pixie dust from Tinkerbell, we gave the magical show ‘Disney on Ice presents Princess and Heroes‘ 10/10 despite a rather scary dragon. We attended the show in Auckland on 2nd June and we were lucky enough to meet Cinderella and get her autograph at the Disney on Ice media launch party at Sofitel Auckland beforehand.
I’m always impressed by the creativity that knows no bounds at the Auckland Art & Craft Fair. It’s held twice a year during June and December in Aotea Centre to inspire and delight and of course, shop. See what amazing crafts and design I got at the Auckland Craft Fair here.
On 26th June I drank whisky and green tea from paper cups with Daniel Bedingfield and did these photos and this interview.
July
Daniel Bedingfield – musician, songwriter and X Factor NZ judge, performed his new single Everything’s going to be Alright, at Juice Bar in Parnell on 4th July with the X Factor NZ team in attendance.
On 10th July, With a blend of the edgy and the feminine, three of the country’s top fashion labels – Zambesi, Company of Strangers and Juliette Hogan – showcased their collections over lunch at Sofitel Auckland at the second-ever Designer Showcase Luncheon in conjunction with New Zealand Fashion Week.
I had a huge surprise at the lunch- for my birthday, Sofitel gave me the chance to open a bottle of Perrier Jouet Champagne – with a sword! It was an amazing and very memorable experience.
Servilles stylists and their guests celebrated a new collaboration with Wella on Monday 29th July with ‘Deadly Sins’, a live fashion and hair editorial photo shoot. Below: twin sisters Kelsey and Baylee Soles of Clyne Models. Read more about Kelsey and Baylee Soles on Thread.co.nz here.

We headed along on Wednesday 14th August to the Balm Street store to celebrate Karen Walker’s 20th birthday of being in Newmarket. For me, it was more special than your average store opening or anniversary event.
Thread’s exclusive Summer photoshoot, Ventured Daze, was photographed on location by Daniella Kristofski, styled by Diane Pantoja, thanks to Smashbox and label.m, on 24th August.
September

WICKED The Broadway Musical flew into Auckland, and Thread got to attend the media call this week, where we got to experience first hand the stunning set design – including a massive dragon over the stage – and hear the incredible cast members sing. We also got to walk the ‘green carpet’ at opening night at the Aotea Centre.
NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK is our ‘fashion Christmas’ every year. Read our reviews here and search ‘NZFW 2013’ on Thread website to read over 40 articles on it. My summary is online here of what was hot (and not-so-hot) in my best of New Zealand Fashion Week 2013. It was a leaner and meaner schedule this year with some breathtaking moments, including the descending stage tent at Trelise Cooper below.
One of the unquestioned highlights of fashion week was the Underground Fashion Installation of Ciel PR labels Jimmy D, Blue Blank, Eugenie, Kowtow, Jessica Grubisa, Maaike, Miss Crabb, Otsu, Thistle Brown, and Underground Sundae held in the carpark of Sofitel Auckland. Photograph Izzie Austin
