With a queue down the street, Top Shop on the Top Floor at The Department Store opened today to the sort of retail mayhem and bun fighting more accustomed to Harrods’ January sales or the front row at a Justin Bieber concert.
Due to Iceandic volcanic ash disruptions only the first shipment of 1200 pieces made it on time for the 1st May opening, now changed to an opening weekend rather than a permanent opening.
Karen Walker said there’d be 30 styles coming a week which is only 10% of what Top Shop produces in its flagship stores and she was buying "wide and shallow" meaning very few (12 for clothes, 24 to 36 of denim) of each style to keep them exclusive in the NZ market.
Below: The queue of women down Northcroft Street for the 9am opening. Mikhail Gherman – whom we would never stoop to call Mr Karen Walker – was commenting how it may run out before they all got the chance to shop. VIP customers and those who booked a hair treatment from 7am were treated to a breakfast buffet and manis or blow waves. We enjoyed a wash and blow dry with the lovely Katherine.
Below: VIP customers picking through racks of Top Shop. The clothes ranges were replenished for the public at 9am which was a nice touch so they didn’t miss out.
Shoes ranged in price from $90 to $210 for leather shoe-booties.
Karen Walker couldn’t pick out her favourite garment for us when prompted as she "loves all of them", but did pick these platform wedge shoes.
Loads of helpful staff were in good humour despite their 6.30am start and assisting customers and giving out free coffees.
A VIP customer trying on the real leather black biker ($360).
