Myself and friend Annabel were fortunate to be offered the opportunity to have our hair done for the evening by the REDKEN team. Danelle Radel and her team from Klone were busily tending to the models hair. Sexy curls, frizz and height were the popular styles created this year. Annabel looked stunning with curls and hair up at the side.
I got beautiful curls which were far too gorgeous to put in an up-style to hide them away.
Twenty eight designers travelled nationally and internationally to compete in the 2010 iD Dunedin Emerging Designer Awards.
Judges included the world renowned designer Zandra Rhodes, Sculptor/Jeweller Andrew Logan, local jeweller David McLeod, Katie Newton; Fashion and Beauty Editor of the Sunday Star times weekend magazine Sunday, Stefano Soplelza representing Mittelmoda_the_Fashion_Award and Isaac Hindin-Miller fashion blogger of www.isaaclikes.com.
Samantha Hayes of TV3 was the compère for the evening. She was dressed by Carlson and wore a stunning pink dress.
Show highlights included:
Sandra Tupu’s collection ‘Tatau’ a Pasifika themed menswear collection.
Roxanna Zamani’s ‘Incongruous’ collection was cleverly designed with geometric lines showing volume, curves and sculpture. The model looked gift wrapped in the white layered piece.
First Prize of $5,000 from Life Pharmacy and entry to Mittelmoda 2010 award was awarded to Igor Galas of Croatia for his fabulous knitwear collection.
‘Protector from knitted galaxy’ represented a protector coming from a knitted galaxy to save the earth from the phenomenon of global warming. His work had a nurturing quality and the wearer could hide in it and escape from the heat with the cooling qualities of wool and warm up in cool weather. Perfect for a Dunedin winter!
Ryota Shiga of Japan had a peaceful collection called ‘AI……’ the garments were calming and gentle. They are about happiness and expressing emotion by wearing an Obi sash and kimono patterns. He was fairly awarded second prize of $3,000 from the Dunedin City Council.
Ichiro Suzuki of the UK took tweed to menswear. He was awarded $3,000 from Mild Red for third place. His collection ‘Tweedissmo Volume 2’ showed clever use of shredding, ruching and cape like design features smartening up tweed from casual sporting jackets to fetching menswear.
It was a lively, exciting evening and the winners and entrants can be very proud of their work. The organising team can congratulate themselves on running a very professional event for the past six years and I look forward to see what the 2011 show has in store for New Zealand followers of fashion.
