NYFW 1 – Diary

Soundtrack for the Day: Flume “Deluxe Edition”

The sun wasn’t going to appear for another three hours as I queued for airport security. My fellow passengers were either half asleep or loudly anxious (winter storm panic). I belonged to the first camp.

And was suffering at the clamour of the other.

The aural onslaught was muffled by music and my beanie, allowing me to find coffee and a pain au chocolat. But as soon as I was in my seat, I was suddenly awake. I was off to New York Fashion Week to report for ThreadNZ again!

This time around it hasn’t been easy. In late 2013, it was announced by IMG Mercedes Benz Fashion Week’s Christine Bennett announced that they would be cutting back about 20% of the media guest list in order to refocus the week back to business. Mostly fashion bloggers have been on the chopping block. There’s been much debate about the alienation of a community that has great influence over consumers. I won’t hash it out here; maybe in a separate article. But if you’re interested, I suggest the articles from Wall Street Journal, Fashionista.com and Refinery29.

Unfortunately, this refocus has seemingly trickled down to smaller markets, like outlets from New Zealand. This doesn’t mean that Thread will be lacking in reports! We still have invites to shows and backstage access. And we’ll be capturing some of the fashion in and around the Concrete Jungle. And let’s be honest, we can wax philosophical about the Fashion Industry, but we also want to see beautiful clothes, make up, and hair!

As for today, despite the freezing temperatures, the sun blessed the first day of NYFW. I made my way to the Lincoln Center, home of this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. It was noticeably subdued. Maybe because of the newly instituted velvet rope or just because it’s the first day and we have another long 7 days to go.
