While there was some disappointment of fewer shows this year, it was nice to have a bit of time to savour the moment of the Karen Walker show. I was behind the scenes…

I’m sorry readers that I’m behind. I know NYFW is over and you’re now onto LFW. But I have some more things to say!
Last year, I had to schlep myself between shows across Manhattan. And while that was exhilarating, my synapses collapsed. Shows never start on time, you can’t predict what the subway or traffic might do and you know, snow + heels = omnishambles. So it’s a constant stream of recalibration: “So if the show starts in the next 5 minutes…?” “How do I get to the East Side from HERE?” “Can I jump this slush puddle?” and “Why are there no hovercrafts yet?”
While there was some disappointment of fewer shows this year, it was nice to have a bit of time to savour the moment of the Karen Walker show. I was behind the scenes and now waiting with anticipation to see the fruit of all of the labour. Read it here.
We shot a video backstage at Karen Walker’s New York show! Watch it here.
As I mentioned, shows start late. This gives you time to catch up with people, meet new people and people watch. And in my case, slightly insult someone.
A young man came up to me and asked if I had taken photos of the people at the front row. So goes the conversation (obviously a paraphrase as I can’t remember it exactly and his English was heavily accented):
Me: No…
Him: Who do you photograph for?
Me: Thread New Zealand
Him: Do you want to take pictures of them?
Me: Um… sorry, I don’t know who they are?
Him: [slight glare] Never mind, I’ve never heard of (mumbles something)…
Oops. A writer next to me laughed and remarked how she thought I was brilliant. Not so much did I feel brilliant. I had just meant that I couldn’t see who they were. But I figured it out thanks to Instagram (I apologise to them and any readers who are aghast that I didn’t know them).
DJs and Bloggers.
But I did know these two. Man Repeller and Isaac Likes.
And in addition to the people watching and not people watching, I met the lovely Evelyn Ebrey who has written for Thread. Hope the move went smoothly! I caught up with the lovely Monroe Steele, a fabulous New York-based fashion blogger. I just listened to the chatter around me.
The lights darkened, the chatter hushed and the music blared. Ok. I’m going to admit it. Getting invited to a New York Fashion Week show is pretty cool. Being there is pretty cool.
