Roughly 200 students from the University of Canterbury were treated to a spectacular fashion showcase on Thursday 21 July 2011, the first of its kind to ever feature at the institution.
While the cost-free event was a Canterbury student exclusive, the show was really stolen by students from the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, with collections from five of the Institute’s designers providing the show’s major feature.
The Erksine building, normally dedicated to study, certainly set an electric atmosphere for the evening.
Complete with a temporary catwalk and a second-story viewing panel, the venue was packed to capacity with attendees enjoying the non-existent cost and complimentary bubbles.
Also enjoying the fun, student-focused atmosphere, the event’s MC began proceedings with a humorous education on proper show etiquette – teaching the crowd how laugh appropriately, clap politely and yell blatant obscenities.
No obscenities were in order however, the designers showcasing an outstanding variety of talent and styles.
Holly Choie’s chic and versatile collection was particularly eye catching, her casual line featuring a brilliant edgy flair.
The student audience was not forgotten, with stylist Abby Jane displaying a collection of outfits purchased for less than $200. She featured clothes bought from widely used, everyday stores and and directed her line equally at men and women.
The night also featured collections from CPIT’s Georgia Currie, Ellen Stick, Alice Hayes and Sarah James, along with body art from Design and Arts College of New Zealand students.
The event itself was part of the University of Canterbury Student Association’s Winterlude festival, and was hosted by the campus ‘Gentlemen’s Club’ – a group renowned for stylish events.
