Flights and fashion at NYFW

By the time I could see the skyline of Manhattan, dusk was setting in and I missed all of the Saturday shows. But I wandered toward the Lincoln Center just to sneak a peak at the festivities…

I should be at a party, rubbing well tailored shoulders with the fashion elite that have descended upon New York Fashion Week.

But I’m knackered.

For almost two days I checked the weather reports, hoping Nemo would be a gentle dusting of snow. Nope.

My original flight was cancelled along with the other 2000 flights in the North East. With another flight booked for a much later arrival date, I already knew I would miss Katya Leonovich. But I had high hopes that I could make it to the Alexander Wang show.

Everything looked good. The sun was shining in Toronto, blessing me onwards. Elation piqued every step I took to the plane. I was almost giddy in my seat. But just as the plane’s engines purred, they stopped abruptly and there was a muffled message from the cockpit. Flights were grounded as there was too much congestion. So I waited in the plane.

Waiting can be terribly draining.

By the time I could see the skyline of Manhattan, dusk was setting in and I missed all of the Saturday shows. But I wandered toward the Lincoln Center just to sneak a peak at the festivities. There was a trickle of people in and out of the pavilion. It wasn’t the mayhem I was looking for.

A petite woman coming out of the pavilion asked if I’d take her photo. We struck up a conversation about the mayhem of Fashion Week. She invited me to an invite-only exclusive party being thrown by the top fashion bloggers (like Tommy Ton!) My acceptance was at the tip of my tongue, but my body retaliated. I was drained and the annoying conscious reminded me I had a 9am backstage pass to Delpozo.

There was a time when I could stay up for 24 hours and be coherent. But that time has long passed.

And I’m glad I chose to go back to bed, because I received an email that we had Redken backstage access to Victoria Beckham!

For 8:15 am.

I will give you this, for all of the glamour and partying Fashion week has in it’s mystique, there are a lot of hard working people making this machine work. Even at the hideous hours of the morning!
