At 6 o’clock on Friday 8th April I arrived at iD backstage headquarters to get my hair styled by the REDKEN team. The lovely Kate Innes-Jones of L’Oreal greeted me and to my great surprise Richard Kavanagh was to personally style my hair. I had a chat to Richard while he expertly transformed my tresses from drab to fab and created a cute beach style ponytail for me.
Richard enjoys iD Dunedin Fashion Week, and last year felt a gap in his hectic schedule when he was unable to attend. He stated that iD is up there with international fashion shows with its level of professionalism. His REDKEN team at iD has more work to do in a shorter space of time.
“We all work as a team with one vision and 40 arms flying. There is no ego and room for owning a model, we all just chip in and get it done. Sometimes the most valuable thing a stylist can bring to the team is willingness and alertness to pass pins and hold hair to make it easier for another team member.”
Designers on display at the chilly railway station for the 2001 iD Fashion show were:
Carlson, twenty-seven names, Liz Mitchell, Akira Isogawa, Charmaine Reveley, Darnell Collection, Amelia Boland, Company of Strangers, DADA Vintage, Elise Barnes, Elusiv, Kathryn Wilson, Vaughan Geeson, Katie-maree Cole, Lela Jacobs, Liz Ung, Lou and Ash, Maaike, Mild Red, Nom*D, Rachel Webb, Richard Moore, Sara Dooley, Tamsin Cooper & Silkbody, Kate Bolzenello, Marie Kelly, Sarah Mok and Shenaz Engineer.
Highlights of the evening for me included…
Carlson- I love her work. Her dresses are so feminine, tailored and beautiful.
Pink was a stand out colour for me with a gorgeous pink Carlson coat catching my eye.
Shoe lovers would be drooling over Kathryn Wilson’s collection. Paired with Boh Runga jewellery there was a great mix of colour ranging from dalmation spots, orange work boots, purple/pinks and my favourite; red with tassels.
DADA Vintage provided some beautiful pieces. I liked the pale blue coat, a face print on the back of a garment and the look was finished off with Russian hats which warmed me up whilst sitting in the cool Dunedin weather at the Railway Station.
This year Vaughan Geeson’s work made me sit up and take notice. One dress was so wearable and such a beautiful colour that I must go check it out in store. Galaxy themes went through his work think shooting stars- well done Vaughan.
Liz Mitchell’s collection provided a new face to the iD show. Once again pink was a feature. Liz used beautiful Asian-inspired silks and there was plenty of shimmer and glamour. My favourite piece was a beautiful red dress with fabric so rich and train so long. It would make a great wedding dress or ball gown.
Akira Isogawa was a special guest designer this year. His work created an illusion of height and was very detail focused.
For the final item guests were treated to a view of Charlotte Smith’s “Darnell Collection”. This collection feature beautiful Dior and Chanel pieces from across the decades. There were some exquisite pieces and the collection was memorable to me. Thank you Charlotte for sharing your collection.
Once again iD Dunedin Fashion Week did not disappoint. It was a busy week of events and I am filled with pride for my hometown and the professional world class event the iD committee put so much time and energy in to produce.
