Sea monsters wriggled a silken tentacle over blouses and dresses as Karen Walker showed her Jules Verne-inspired Summer 2012/13 collection last night.
Sunday 26th August saw the first of the eagerly-anticipated public ticketed shows as part of the Marr Factory event at Golden Dawn bar in Ponsonby. Almost all of the $40 a ticket shows have sold out on Ticketek and some for tonight’s Karen Walker show were going for $105 on Trademe, such is its popularity and pulling power.
The collection was inspired by both Verne’s Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and the Victorian era it was born from so the clothes have a pretty vintage look, with fitted waists and high neck ruffles.
As always, accessories are key and the new collection Karen Walker Eyewear featured plenty of metallic goggles perfect for an undersea adventure; the Fantastique filigree sunglasses which arrive instore next week. Bags were sleek, strapless clutches and came in either neutral tan, or brightly-coloured hues or reds and blues. Shoes by Beau Coops featured panels of contrasting leather and prints, occasionally with ruffle texture.

M.A.C. brought a bold lip for summer to Karen Walker with Viva Glam Nicki and Neon Orange lipsticks. Eyes – barely seen under the sunglasses – had charcoal brown eyeshadow. Cheeks had So Sweet So Easy Cremeblend blush and a brushing of Silver Dusk iridescent powder.

Guests lined the courtyard bar as models walked a chalk outline runway with a lighting rig set up in the dim bar to illuminate the clothes.
