Aucklander Danielle Frisby is in New York City and blogged about attending the Karen Walker SS14 show at NY Fashion Week for Thread…
Karen Walker showed her Eastern meets urban SS14 collection, Utopia, today at Pier 59 studios, Manhattan, New York City. Karen Walker’s Eyewear models from her Advanced Style campaign and photographer Ari Seth Cohen were all in attendance.
The models wore their hair – by Stephen Marr’s Lauren Gunn and Jason Chong Li with Hair Director Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble – pulled to the side and a beautiful, natural face by Benjamin Puckey for Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and nails by Butter London.
The music was rock and suited the space and the ambience of a catwalk show held on a pier, at Pier51 Studios again.
Colour themes were built around solid neutrals of white and navy, with blocks of soft pastels: pinks, peaches and lavenders.
The signature prints included an orange psychedelic retro-floral design, and a swirling navy-on-white design. Wrap a scarf around your neck and forget Gangnam style; Karen’s gone Krishna style.
Befitting a Spring Summer line, black didn’t feature – but woolly beanies did, for those cool spring nights.
The silhouette has moved from the waist to a far looser, relaxed look, and side-fastened jackets.
Trousers were loose fitting and cuffed above the ankle. Fabrics were stunning and included linen muslins and gauzes, collegiate knitwear and soft silhouettes in cotton.
Introduced for the first time were handbags in collaboration with Benah and sneakers in collaboration with BePositive. The handbags were utility styled and Walker’s new shoe range includes sneakers and military style work boots.
I can’t wait to see these fabulous pieces in store; my personal favourite was a classic white cotton dropped sleeve t-shirt for day and the magic carpet print high-neck keyhole dress for night.
