Cuda Sisters unveiled their Summer 2012 collection The Magic Moment with a colourful and fun runway show in Auckland at The Basement Theatre on Thursday 9th August with a standing room-only crowd and a catwalk draped with pink streamers.
The SS12/13 show opened with its dark side; showing little black dresses on brunettes, before angelic blondes walked in plumed skirts. Last up, the fruit burst explosion of colour that they are known for and perhaps do best.
The collection had cutaway detailing, shoestring strap bodices and crop tops as well as flared skating dresses and 1950s-style swimsuits. Its vibe is flirty, fun and youthful. Fabrics included lurex brocades, sequins, blooming florals, and solid bright colour-blocking.
What worked well? The styling was spot on; eye veils and stunning headpieces (designed by Mana) and the hair by Kokomo salon was faultless. The make-up by The Body Shop was also flawless and we liked the creamy, dewy faces with strong winged eyes.
The models were gorgeous, with lots of fresh faces we hadn’t seen around, whom we hope get cast at fashion week.
The goody bag deserves mention for – as well as the refreshing Elliotts juice, The Body Shop perfume samples and goats milk soap roses – the hand-stitched bird brooch that the team handmade for everyone. The bag itself was a screenprinted delight, too.
What could have been better? Perhaps some of the bodice fits, and some skirts that were so short that models were pulling them down as they walked (Free Drinks Dresses, I heard them called!)
Cuda Sisters is made up of Meg Thompson, (and sometimes joined by her sister Tanja Jade, aka Misery) and Mana Harknett. They closed their St Kevin’s Arcade store in 2011 and now sell online at http://cudasisters.bigcartel.com/ making their frutti tutti flavours accessible to all their many fans, wherever they may live.
Overall, a vibrant, full of life show with loads of fun and colour. Kudos to the Cuda Sisters!
