The day that Nemo hit the North East coast, Marc Jacobs made a shocking announcement. He had to postpone his Marc Jacobs show on the 11th of February to closing night.
There was much speculation, though the fashion giant has said that it was due to the samples being delayed by the storm.
The diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs took its big sister’s spot. As one of the most anticipated shows each season at NYFW, there is tight security everywhere and limited availability for seats.
Even backstage passes were only allotted 5 minutes at a time.
While the models were perfectly chilled, the massive entourage of stylists hurried to get all the work done. There was a tense atmosphere at the Lincoln Centre’s Theatre backstage.
This was Jacobs’s first show at the main space, as his usual home, Lexington Avenue Armory, was in repair. The backstage was crammed which didn’t allow for easy movement. This was made all the more difficult by high profile fans (i.e. big spenders) weaving in and around. And of course, there were reporters and photographers vying for some tidbit about the collection.
PR and security did their best to let the stylists work without bother. They corralled everyone into a free space till, promising an interview with Guido, Redken’s Global Styling Director. When Guido was free, he animatedly discussed his bold choice of big hair.
Guido wanted the hair to hold its own against the striking prints and gem tones of the collection. He sought to bring a 1940’s uptown girl look, but a little more fun. He used only two products: Redken Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray Foam and Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray. He dried the hair with Guts 10, deeply parted the hair, and then set 1 inch curls.
After releasing the curls, he brushed them and then back brushing for some tease. It was imperative that this not be symmetrical or perfect. Then he swept the front section and secured with a pin. He gave a generous spray of Fashion Work 12.

Guido’s dramatic hair embellished the stunning collection. The retro cuts and prints were attested to 1970’s though there were some silhouettes that spoke to earlier eras. The collection exuded an unbridled sensuality in comparison to the 2012 collection. Even the more structured pieces were coy. The accessories were perfectly paired and luxurious as always.
Marc by Marc Jacobs is the more accessible version of the signature Marc Jacobs line. But these pieces will make any woman or man feel like they are living in the lap of luxury.
