Thread met designers backstage at the 2011 Miromoda Fashion Designer Awards Competition held at the Tea Gardens at Massey University in Wellington.
"Miro" is the technical term for twining muka fibres in traditional M?ori weaving."Moda" is Italian for Fashion.
Together, Miromoda is the design awards held for upcoming Maori fashion designers. Miromoda Maori Fashion Design Awards winners and runners up will showcase their collections at NZ Fashion Week in August.
Jewellery and clothing designer Adrienne Whitewood has developed some beautiful works. Adrienne uses leather, traditional weaving and copper to create contemporary jewellery.
After winning the established section with her collection Te Aho Tapu (The Sacred Thread), Adrienne Whitewood of Rotorua was also named Overall Winner.
She will receive mentorship of Sydney-based Miromoda co-founder, Rex Turnbull, attend Australia Fashion Week and be mentored in fashion business by Jack Yan, Publishing Editor of Lucire and a judge at Miromoda.

Garments in Adrienne’s current clothing collection are made of natural fibres such as linen, merino, silk and leather expressed in a palate of ox blood and dark brown.
Entering in the Haute Couture section of Miromoda were design team of four, Dmonic Intent. They embrace the use of NZ wool, and the NZ wool industry, in their wearable wool garments.
Dmonic Intent jewellery and accessories have been picked up at Texan Art Schools and House of Hedone in High Street Auckland.
The Auckland label, made up of three sisters: Maxine Wooldridge, Samara Wooldridge and Khris Leach, earned first place in the Haute Couture section with their collection entitled Black Sheep. They were also runners-up in the Established section for their The Alchemist collection.
A very talented designer, Keri Wanoa with her label ‘Whiri’, entered her range of jewellery and clothing. Her jewellery is all hand-carved, with both traditional and contemporary aspects.
We love the yellow ring and the manu manu pattern in the swimwear.
Keri has shown at New Zealand Fashion Week and her garments are very wearable.
