Today marked day two of New York Fashion Week. Although today featured an incredible line up of well established, and respected fashion designers showcasing their collections, for me today was all about Rebecca Taylor AW12, one of my ultimate most-favourite fashion designers, who would be showing her collection.
For those not familiar with Rebecca Taylor’s collections there are a few things you need to know. Firstly, Rebecca Taylor is a fellow New Zealander who is tearing up the fashion industry internationally.
Celebrities, fashion editors, high powered stylists and buyers fill the front rows of her shows, while legions of Rebecca Taylor fashion-lovers wait not-so-patiently outside the tent to see if there is any standing room available to view the latest collection. If her runway shows are any indication of her popularity and notoriety; Rebecca Taylor is off the fashion-charts.
The second thing you need to know is that Rebecca Taylor is renowned for being a master of balancing classic femininity within a contemporary context. Her collections are always the right amount of girly, with a city-edge, never veering too far from the other. This balance is really tricky to master, as it is so easy to sway into too-girly territory, or alternatively, become so ‘edgy’ that you are dark. Where is the middle mark?
Below: The tent at Lincoln fills up for the Rebecca Taylor show.
The collection shown today at New York Fashion Week’s Lincoln Centre was tribute to Rebecca Taylor’s vision and direction, whilst once again showcasing her immense talent and ability to continue this difficult femme-edge balance.
Seen on the runway today were high-low hemlines, a ton of texture and playfulness with fabrics; think silk, velvet, leather and suede all worn together, sheer paneling, classic feminine cuts, and a palette of midnight blue, black, charcoal, rich burgundy, and metallic-hue fabrics with a soft sheen.
If you want to embody some Rebecca Taylor his coming winter, don’t shy away from playing with fabrics and textures. Wear lace and velvet together, and make layering your new best friend. It all works towards creating a style that is so individually you, and that is simply unreproducible by any other.
