As usual, a sense of humour and rebellious streak were the essence of today’s SS2011 show ‘Untitled’ by Stolen Girlfriends Club.
The address was simply ‘the car park stairs leading up to New World College Hill’ and once there we were asked to find a spot in the supermarket, look incongruous and wait for it all to become obvious.
And under fluorescent lights, rock music booming uncomfortably off the polished vinyl floors, there were plenty of wearable pieces to tempt any hip, young thing nostalgic for their school days.
A casually sexy, bleached denim and leather biker jacket was an instant classic and harked back to 90s bad boy Dylan McKay.
Swishy chiffon separates came in the eye-popping Crayola red, and looked effortless layered with a matching jacket or neat, cropped sweater.
Dresses were knee length, and high waisted, and save for a droopy-boobed white singlet and sarong combo, gave plenty of reasons to start squirreling away.
A Balenciaga-esque print was cut into a gorgeous cap-sleeved t-shirt dress and will be my first purchase of next season.
Shirts for the boys came detailed with tartan, preppy Chambray or prom-night pleating, not a slogan in sight. Flat-front pants were rolled at the hem and paired with those 90s icon – creepers! But far from ironic, it all just looked right.
The appeal of SGC is that it’s essentially anti-trend, and can leave you scratching your head if you’re not in-the-know. Whilst the venue was fresh and unique, the clothes felt overwhelmed amongst the riot of colour and noise and the displeasure of the genuine supermarket shoppers made it difficult to get lost in the moment.
Stolen Girlfriends Club are known for their quirky shows but in this instance it was a bit too cool for cool’s sake when the clothes themselves are so instantly desirable.
