I had quietly high expectations for the showing of STORM’s limited edition Glamour Collection on this last day of Wellington Fashion Week.
I noticed immediately that there was more of a hum in the entrance lounge than there’d been for other daytime shows; an air of anticipation suggesting I wasn’t the only one.
Wearing a deep purple top with a long black skirt, large black feather wings on her back and holding a large and intricate silver sceptre-like metal object aloft like some kind of talisman, the first model to walk made an impressive entrance and ensured a dramatic start to the showing of a strong, powerful collection. Feathered garments put me in mind of a raven – sleek, striking and with a slightly ill-omened air – with the striking, timeless designs staying true to the STORM aesthetic. My favourite piece of the collection was the limited edition ‘Wanted’ black leather jacket which I confess, made me ‘Oooooo!’ out loud.
Darkness dominated in both the garments and makeup, with a very deep red lip on the models. Black formed the base of the collection, with silver and other shades of the night coming through to add dimension to the dark mood. Sleek ponytails complemented the skinny pants which featured heavily, and glistening, sparkling fabrics called to mind rainfall – fitting for a label named STORM, and almost as if we were being plunged into the depths of a gothic novel. The use of skulls and cruciform in jewellery kept the dark gothic edge constant.
We saw feather-like detailing which I’ve already mentioned, sheer fabrics and lace, pleating, sparkles, wool, and throughout, excellent use of layering and an impressively styled collection.
The live music was a great dimension to the show, and added a different and raw edge to the music playing.
Large silver confetti rained down as the models made their final walk, taking the audience completely by surprise, and making a final unforgettable statement about the collection.Below: photo by Masanori Udagawa
Storm was my final show for the week, and I applaud them for nailing their vision for the collection and the show, they could not have done the collection more justice.
