The first runway show of Wellington Fashion Week got off to a slightly fashionably late start (of course) but made up for it with gorgeous collections from some of New Zealand’s biggest fashion designers and some newer names…
The first runway show of Wellington Fashion Week got off to a slightly fashionably late start (of course) but made up for it with gorgeous collections from some of New Zealand’s biggest fashion designers.
Hermoine Flynn was first to hit the runway in the old museum building at Massey University – the perfect venue for such a glamorous event.
Her ‘Homogenised Human’ collection featured monochrome jersey dresses and layering of metallic midi tops to create structure and a bit of sparkle. The colouring was very much like moody winter skies – with dusky blues, greys and silver shown throughout.
Ashley Fogel designs then took to the catwalk, lightening the mood with bright colours and vibrant prints. The collection used simple designs with smart choice of texture and layering to create a fresh feel.
Lucy McIntosh showed a themed collection of shirt dresses. Features included tiered panels, a drop back and block colouring. The dresses were simple and crisp, and gave the collection a casual-corporate feel, while keeping it fresh by wearing the collection over black leggings or a satin jodhpur pant.
Nouveau featured a signature print throughout its urban, easy-wear collection. The print appeared on most pieces, including jumpers and halter dresses with a keyhole front. Drop back and asymmetrical hemlines were a mainstay across the collection.
Moochi’s simple designs and dark hues were highlighted with neon yellow detailing – a signature element in this season’s clothing. Dresses and blouses included tiered panels and a loose fit, making the collection floaty and free. The stand-out was a green paisley dress with a retro 70s vibe.
Mardle’s collection had a classy corporate feel, with beautiful tailoring and a magic pop of colour. I loved the darker tones clashing with a splash of vibrant fuschia and blues. Shorts and pants also featured a swarming bird pattern in midnight blue and lemon yellow.
Taylor hit the runway and the first note I made was ‘wow’. This collection blew me away and had a much more haute couture feel than the previous lines. A woollen cowl neck featured throughout, and the use of harsh and soft fabrics gave it a dramatic ‘Game of Thrones’ feel. This regal and ethereal collection was a stand-out for me.
Closing the night was New Zealand must-have Trelise Cooper. The collection featured felt ten-gallon hats and check prints, which gave it a very western vibe. Trelise Cooper always impresses, with detail and tailoring and this was offset by the choice of ‘country fair’ prints and feminine designs.
Overall everyone seemed very impressed with the collections. Mardle and Taylor were highlights for me, showcasing the creativity and innovation of New Zealand’s designers and attention to detailing that makes an outfit a cut above the rest.
