WORLD brings A Night of Luxury

In a sometimes rather drab outside world, the spectacularly fabulous WORLD brought its aptly-titled catwalk show ‘A Night of Luxury’ to a packed house of its fans with a glamorous evening at the Langham Auckland on Wednesday, 22 August.

The inner-city hotel’s Great Room made a fitting venue for the runway show, with its golden ceiling and crystal chandaliers. Thread liked the salon-style set-up, with guests – who had bought $79 tickets to attend, drink Lanvin champagne, and eat divine Volker Marecek canapes – seated around tables set with white linen and fine glassware. This is far nicer than sitting in rows at fashion week. It was like a wedding, but with two dozen brides.

Not many labels could hold a summer show in such high glam. Often, summer collections are tee-shirt, singlets, and shorts-heavy. Not WORLD.

There were ballgowns in satin, two-piece suits, and structured jackets – including crowd favourite, the Edwardian Jacket, with its inset star motif.

The evening opened with a short film compiling memorable moments from the many years of the fashion label. Next up, a hilarious film captured Francis Hooper, Denise l’Estrange Corbet and Benny Castles behind the scenes drinking Man o’ War wines and wearing tiaras and racing to the show in a Nissan Juke (cue jokes on Denise being the Duchess with her Juke awaiting.)

Then, to laughter from the audience, the film stopped as Denise ran in flustered from her Juke, wearing her tiara, and up onto the stage where she welcomed guests from the podium and started the show.

Francis Hooper and Denise l’Estrange Corbet’s daughter, Pebbles Hooper of Pencil Boutique, sat with Buckwheat, the fantastic drag queen performer who has starred in and hosted WORLD shows over the years.

Out of this world, alien-esque hair was complemented by futuristic nails in dots and crazy colours, created by the leading fashion nails team of Magic Tan & Beauty led by Petrina Martin.

Hair was led by Michael Beel for ghd with Derek Elvy and Buoy Salon Wellington. Make-up was directed by James Leuii and Hiro Nemoto for Shiseido, assisted by Pauline Pua and the Cut Above Academy.

Ankle socks were painted on with brightly-hued glitter paint (NOT the Dulux range of house paints that Denise designs!) teamed with footwear from Number One Shoes.

All the models – exclusively from NOVA Models – walk the catwalk finale.

WORLD team Francis Hooper, Denise l’Estrange Corbet and Benny Castles take to the stage to applause.
