I love her clever tailoring, and simple colour palette, it all feels very stripped back – until you look at the construction of the clothing – as the detail is always amazing. This year is of course no exception. The silouette is very strong this year…
One of the shows missing from New Zealand Fashion Week last year was of course Alexandra Owen. Instead, she was in New York showing her winter 2012 collection.
She was greatly missed, as we are always very eager to see what she will put on the runway, and her theatricality is always a highlight of the week.
I love her shows. I love her clothes and have something from each of the last couple of years. I love her clever tailoring, and simple colour palette, it all feels very stripped back – until you look at the construction of the clothing – as the detail is always amazing.
This year is of course no exception. The silouette is very strong this year – with sleek fitted jackets and dresses; no deconstruction here. With mid-century couture shapes as her starting point, the end results are S curved backs and dropped raglan sleeves, and accentuated necklines.
It has a grown up, sophisticated feel to it. With gorgeous wool coating, cotton tweeds and heavy modern jersey, there are subtle but strong fabrics underpinning the design.
With pops of colour, orange and brick red, to awaken the senses as well as the more traditional palette of navy and black, this is a collection that is highly covertable.
Our favourites of the season are
The divine Gatsby Dress in Navy knit $650
The vibrant Diana Dress in Brick $590 with its swinging skirt
The tailored look of the Tate dress in the black and silver print Winter’s Tale $750
The Sliver Blouse in khaki $390 with its wonderful sleeve tucking detail, and the Gatsby Skirt in black wool $490
Her coats are always something special with nipped in waist of the Liberty Coat in Navy Wool Coating $950 and the Pocket Shirtdress in white $490
And we had to add another coat as they are just so beautiful, the City Coat in Camel $950 with the Opera Dress in Winter’s Tale $850
And our pick of the season, the Opera Dress in Black Tweed $850 – it makes us what to go to the Opera just to wear this dress we love it so much.
Alexandra has had a busy season with the opening of her beautiful new shop in Wellington. Find it at 253 Wakefield Street, ph 04 384 3950, or visit her website at www.alexandraowen.co.nz.
