New York Fashion Week has been a whirlwind, and it’s about to become even more so for Thread readers, because I am taking you backstage directly to some of New York Fashion Week’s most exclusive designer’s shows.

Backstage at Rebecca Taylor I viewed the direction of the hair and makeup for the newest Autumn/Winter collection firsthand.

Models’ hair was styled with an edgy, choppy side fringe, with hair pieces added for extra volume and texture. M.A.C. directed makeup, creating a masterful makeup look that defined models’ cheekbones, and included a focus on natural strong brows.

The collection itself told a story of a modern city girl, with a dash of New York downtown-edge. Strong brows, and textured hair speaks strongly towards feminine confidence and certainty.

If you want to recreate the Rebecca Taylor hair and make-up look this winter, here are my exclusive behind-the-scenes tips:

Hair: It is all about texture. Play with your own natural hair texture and test out different techniques. Try twist drying, braid drying, and scrunching to give you hair extra oomph and vitality. Mix two distinct hairstyling-styles together to embrace an edgy feminine look. For example, why not try a loose side chignon paired with a straight, layered, side fringe?

Make-up: Let your brows do the talking. I am obsessed with eyebrows, because they truly do frame the face, and the right brow can quickly change your look completely. If you haven’t already, try embracing a more natural brow shape rather than a thin-perfectly shaped brow. It’s more confident, more city-chic, and definitely more downtown New York.
