MF Gatecrashers bring new style to Marr Factory

Jess Molina of BLACKLISTED magazine and Naomi Johnston of Naomi Jorge Photography covered the MR Gatecrashers show at Marr Factory for Thread…

It’s easy to see why there was an excited buzz around the Marr Factory MF Gatecrashers Show held on Saturday, 23 August. Even at 4:30 in the afternoon, there was already a significant queue outside Golden Dawn in Ponsonby. With the sun shinning brightly upon the people in line, it was an omen of what was to come.

New generation of talent in the local fashion industry

Once inside, the anticipation was even more palpable and rightly so. MF Gatecrashers featured five emerging designers who represent the new generation of talent in the local fashion industry: Elizabeth Wilson of Eugenie, Kate Megaw of Penny Sage, Georgia Currie of Georgia Alice, Glen Prentice, and Harman Grubisa’s Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubisa.

Their own distinct looks

For each of the designers to have their own distinct look and then to collectively put that together in a show as succinct as this is no easy feat. But it worked. From Georgia Alice’s cropped top and suit jacket paired with distressed denim, Eugenie’s now-iconic folded pants styling, Penny Sage’s blue knitted dress paired with simple sandals, the silhouette that Glen Prentice seems to have mastered, to the way Harman Grubisa nailed the jacket and skirt combination, it is clear why these designers are shaking up the fashion industry right now.

Soundtrack to the fashion

All that – paired with the right soundtrack – truly made the show what it was. The song selections were well-curated; fast enough for the crowd to have an occasional move to but not distracting from the models walking.

A huge success

But the telltale sign that the night was indeed a success? The crowd cheering loudly, clapping for models every time they came out, and the fact that people were still talking about the show well after it finished.

It was a great way to end a successful week of Marr Factory shows and from the looks of it, the local fashion industry is just about to get stronger.
