Stolen Girlfriends Club THE GUILTY ONES AW14
NZ Fashion Week show at Western Springs Speedway
The last show of day 1 of New Zealand Fashion Week 2014 was Stolen Girlfriends Club, who true-to-form put on a spectacle of a show in both context and content. They are one of the few labels who really go above and beyond in making an effort to outdo themselves each year. Some brands stand still, or even, in the case of a couple, have gone backwards, but not so with Stolen. They really integrate the collection thoughtfully with the setting of the catwalk show, as though it’s a backdrop to play out the model’s roles upon – which of course, is exactly what fashion is. Tonight, the well-dressed actors and actresses were The Guilty Ones, in a play of fast cars, lust, sex, and petrol-fuelled desire.
We headed out west, for one of the only off-site shows of this year’s fashion week, to Western Springs Speedway. This was such a cool setting, and models walked out on the actual racetrack lit with night lights and the headlamps of Minis. Less exciting to me was that the show was followed by an after party at White House nightclub – I get that it’s a progression of the speedway narrative to the girly club but sill, ewww.
Guests assembled on the concrete bleachers and waited for the car lights to switch on. Smoke rose from the cars, joined with the noise and smell of burnouts as their wheels spun, and anticipation mounted. The first model strode out from the smoke to a collective gasp, as she walked a 400 metre catwalk along the gravel track, around a road cone, and back again. Womenswear and menswear featured tartan, pops of yellow, and black and red tees emblazoned with The Guilty Ones.
It was a truly cool show, and definitely a highlight of the fashion week calendar – and very well-produced down to the details such as handing out guests a printed raincoat in case of rain, an Allpress coffee cart to warm us up, and coffee martinis in the bar.
