Mrs Carey’s Concert

As a teen Karen Carey’s soul was touched and awakened to a new level through encountering Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Fast forward several decades and Karen is now a seasoned secondary school music director at a private girls school in Sydney.

The depth of that awakening becomes increasingly obvious. Her self-confessed mission is to give her young charges the opportunity to experience awakenings of a similar nature through the performance of classical music composed by the masters of this vast genre.

Each year she prepares the girls to present a concert at the Sydney Opera House. We follow the months of preparation through developing encounters with several instantly recognizable archetypal students characters. There’s the reticent brilliant performer (Emily Sun), and the student antagonist (16 year old Iris Shi).

As the months of preparation proceed Karen Carey and her talented small group of dedicated fellow teachers face the numerous challenges of envisaging, motivating, encouraging and finally presenting a performance at the SOH, which is truly inspirational. We’re left in no doubt young lives have been touched and transformed by the experience.

Karen Carey embodies what we all needed from our teachers. Here’s hoping at least one kindred soul will touch the lives of our children and grandchildren during their school years.
