It’s not that hard to imagine Dracula as an over-protective father, but as a Hotelier?
Hotel Transylvania, created by Dracula, is a lavish ‘five-stake’ resort where monsters can go to relax and get away from the ‘nasty humans who want to kill us’.
However, his world comes crashing down when a travelling twenty-something human stumbles across the hotel and is told to pose as a monster to stay alive.
He quickly introduces massive amounts of fun to the resort and the monsters love him, he on the other hand, falls in love with Mavis, the beautiful daughter of Dracula.
The story cleverly drew inspiration from many stories of classic literature, including the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet and the anguish of a lot of the monster stories (too deep? It is a kids movie so, maybe…) We saw the movie in 3D but it would be great in 2D too; the story is entertaining and easy to follow even for the 6 year old we took, though she found it a little scary in parts.
The 10 year old who came with us loved the emotions that were conveyed cleverly by the rims of the glasses worn by the Invisible Man. The 8 year olds’ favourite character was Frankenstein ‘because he was a loveable giant’.
The voices on these animated movies always stumps me and I spend most of the movie trying to work out who is who. Adam Sandler did an amazing job as the heavily-accented ‘Drac’, I loved David Spade as the Invisible Man and Cee-Lo Green as the Mummy.
Sony have created an app, which the kids loved. They put their face into a photo of Mavis or Frankenstein then the app animates it, very cute, and it looks like they may add more activities to it in the future.
I guess it has to be said that some of the animated kids movies are a bit hit-and-miss and the stories not always the most engaging, but I really enjoyed Hotel Transylvania. It was a great storyline with great acting and had just enough grown-up jokes to keep it entertaining.
