A product recall is never a good thing – especially if you have bought the product and used it already.

So it follows that remaking a movie that only barely managed a cult following mainly due to its main star might leave a somewhat sour taste for anyone with happy memories of what went before.

In spite of this we now have a 2012 version of Total Recall featuring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsdale and Jessica Biel.

To be honest – it’s not all bad – though it’s not great either but I doubt that would be a surprise to anyone.

All the elements you would expect from a futuristic action movie are there; the imposing, crowded cities, citizens living in oppressive conditions searching for some form of release, and amazing technologies including the ability to ‘recall’ your memories of a happier time or indeed create new ones artificially.

Central to the Total Recall story is the workers who travel daily from the colony (an Australia that looks decidedly like an overbuilt Tokyo if that’s possible) to the UFB (Britian basically) via a tunnel through the centre of the earth.

Although visually impressive and a pleasing movie to watch when you are not requiring much in the way of intellectual stimulation, the story doesn’t quite come together and its not always clear exactly what’s going on.

Below: keeping abreast of the storyline.

Total Recall (2012) makes for a decent date movie with some exciting action, impressive special effects and even a few laughs. Just depends on your date really.
