Take this Waltz
This week I had the pleasure of going to see the film Take this Waltz. It was showing at the very romantic Bridgeway Theatre which was voted one of Auckland’s best date spots and I could see why. It has that olden-day feel when I am sure going to the films was a special and rare occurrence.
Sipping on my sauv blanc I sat back and was immersed into the lives of Margot (Michelle Williams) and Daniel (Luke Kirby). When they meet, they have instant chemistry. They quickly find out that they happen to live across the street from each other which complicates things, as they constantly try to find ways to see each other. She does her best to remain faithful to her husband Lou (Seth Rogan), but it is torn by all her feelings for Daniel, and wondering if she could have a better life.
Take This Waltz is all about the ‘Gap” in each of our lives and the uncharted question of what long-term relationships do to love, sex, and our images of ourselves.
I found myself very mixed on how I really felt about this film. My first reaction was unfortunately “Heavens that was long” at about 2 hours I felt that if it was just 30min shorter and was filled with less long drawn out silent moments it wouldn’t have felt like it was dragging on so much.
However, the cinematography stole the show for me. Director Sarah Polley really made capturing the heat and light of the Toronto summer bring the beauty into what would be a pretty boring scene. My highlight was the surprising Seth Rogan. It was so refreshing to see him in a movie where I could really see him flex his acting muscles.
The soundtrack was also a highpoint. Take This Waltz features the Leonard Cohen song Take this Waltz as well a cover of Closing Time by Feist, and the much beloved Burton Cummings and his 1970s power hit, Stand Tall.
Overall it was a good film; perhaps not a “let’s get everyone around for a movie and popcorn” kind of film but a nice watch on a rainy night. Just make sure you have lots of time.
