Get ready for nights in, and an excuse for elegantly languid loafing. Combine winter’s soft, warm layers in finer weights to stay comfortable and avoid the dreaded Michelin Man effect.

So with dropping temperatures just around the corner, here’s our latest Trendwatch column, ‘Warm Bodies,’ to keep you toasty from top to toe.

Warm yet stylish…

Mondegreen Trouper Sweatshirt Dress in Grey Marle, $179 from www.mondegreen.co.nz
What could be easier to wear than a sweatshirt dress?

Just add a pair of tights or leggings (how about cord-effect leggings from Glassons for $29.99). Hey presto! Thanks to the on-trend ‘leaping tiger’ graphic of Mondegreen’s sweatshirt dress, you are both comfortable and stylish. Roar.

Warm top to toe…

Staying on the animal theme, we love this Gorman ‘Stella’ boot with an easy to wear height and elastic side opening gusset and a super-fun leopard print, AU$299. Get it at www.styletread.com.au with free shipping and returns to New Zealand.

Warm feet…

EMU Australia ‘Brooklana’ short boots, $269.95 from www.emuaustralia.com
Here at Thread we believe that if you are going to do sheepskin boots, you should do it right! These suede leather outer, sheepskin inner, rubber-soled boots from EMU Australia are hand-crafted and water-resistant. We love the fun fashion touch that the studded and segmented bands bring too.

Warm ears…

Icebreaker Skyline Hat $49.95 from www.icebreaker.com

Warm heart…

While you are at it we heartily recommend that you pick yourself up an Icebreaker Siren Cami, too ($59.95). A fine wool layer will keep you warm under anything this winter, and this strappy one won’t interfere with any neckline.

Warm Bodies – the movie…

A romantic comedy with a twist – the twist being it’s a zombie movie – Warm Bodies is a ‘Zom Rom Com’ based on a novel written by Isaac Marion that began as a short story on the Internet where it attracted a cult following and soon after was adapted into a movie. At its heart, Warm Bodies is a poignant tale about the power of human connection; a weirdly-touching story about a zombie called R (played by Nicholas Hoult) that falls in love with human girl Julie (played by Teresa Palmer) and through the power of love, slowly regains human emotion. The romantic appeal no doubt, consciously or otherwise, resides in it being a reworking of Romeo and Juliet, set in a post-apocalyptic North America and represented by R’s charmingly self-effacing voiceover narration. With numerous laugh-out-loud moments, incredibly sad and touching moments (yes – this ‘zom rom com’ had actual touching moments), it’s an odd new take on the zombie genre, and for the most part Warm Bodies works, and delightfully so. Warm bath…

Nothing warms your cockles faster than a warm bath. Here are some lovely things to add both to your bath water, and directly to your warmed skin, post-bath.

Dr. Hauschka Bath Care Kit, below, contains trial sizes of each of five for $33. It contains Lavender, Lemon, Spruce, Rosemary and Sage genuine essential oils, obtained from freshly harvested leaves, peel, needles or flowers. Gentle steam distillation captures the perfume of the essential oils.

Shower Tip: Use in the shower as well as the bath; just pour a small amount onto a flannel along with Dr.Hauschka Body Wash for an aromatic experience.

This is interesting: find out which bath type your personality fits at Dr.Hauschka bath types!

Lavender has long been heralded with has a calming effect and a pleasant sensation of well-being and promoting healthy, restorative sleep.

To this end, try a splash of Dr.Hauschka Bath $42 in your next soak and enjoy a good night’s sleep. It has a clear oily formula and a vibrantly rich strong aroma.

Weleda Lavender bath milk is a milky formulation with a subtler fragrance, and I have even been using it in the children’s bath as it’s all natural.

After the bath…

Restore skin’s moisture after the bath with skin firming and hydrating oils and lotions.

Clarins are of course famous for their amazing cosmetics, but I adore their body skincare as well. They have a line of oils that is fabulous (for the face and body.) This Contour Body Treatment Oil is aimed at the c word (cellulite) with circulation-boosting ingredients that free skin of toxins and release excess fluids, to tone and smooth skin. It is made up entirely of 100% pure plant extracts, including geranium, marjoram, lemon, tonka bean, and hazelnut oil.

Another moisturiser with firming action is the new Trilogy Firming Body Lotion with rosehip, evening primrose and caffeine to firm skin. It is an everyday moisturiser with jojoba and almond oils to hydrate dry skin, and it retails for $29.90.

For a power moisturiser, try Clarins Satin-Smooth Body Lotion; a luxurious light cream with a luminous glow. It contains botanicals and Hyaluronic acid to improve skin’s texture and youthfulness.

Bio-Oil was recently voted the product no-one does without in their cabinet, and it is a huge skincare seller here in New Zealand as it’s such a multi-tasker – form scars to dry skin to stretch marks. You can even add it to the bath – and use it after the bath.
