Where Do We Go Now?
Directed by Nadine Labaki, 2011
Set in an isolated Lebanese village Where Do We Go Now? is about a group of Muslim and Christian women whose loss of male family members to the violence of war brings them together.
When tensions grow between the men of different faiths in the village the women set out to devise a plan to stop any more deaths. Each day they meet at the cafe of a young Christian widower to work together and find ways of easing the trouble.
Where Do We Go Now? felt like the script was written for a play, with its setting of an unnamed village, the use of song in two scenes to express emotions between characters, and absurd comedic moments.
I found parts of the film seemed like directer Nadine Labaki was struggling to keep from slipping into the absolute ridiculous; the storyline takes a strange turn when the village women decide to hire a group of exotic Russian dancers to distract the men.
Despite this, Labaki created a poignant and at times humorous commentary on the impact of civil war and religious differences.
